Vesteda wins international BREEAM Award for entire portfolio
Amsterdam, 1 October 2026 – Vesteda has won the international BREEAM Award in the In-Use Performance category for existing buildings. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) certification institute announced the winners in London on 30 September. The category recognises organisations that demonstrably and continuously improve the sustainability performance of existing buildings. Vesteda won the award thanks to it ability to demonstrate a significant improvement across its entire portfolio of over 28,000 homes – the largest certified portfolio in the world – rather than for a single building. No other nominee submitted a larger certified portfolio.
Vesteda uses the BREEAM framework to systematically identify areas where its portfolio can achieve gains in areas such as energy and water use and CO₂ emissions. The improvements Vesteda has made using this data have demonstrably reduced consumption.
| From | Current | % | |
| Energy | 101.9 kWh/m² | 89.1 kWh/m² | -14% ↓ |
| Water | 0.84 m³/m² | 0.70 m³/m² | -17% ↓ |
| CO₂ emissions | 23.1 kg/m² | 19.5 kg/m² | -16% ↓ |
What this means for tenants
For our tenants, this means better-insulated homes, lower energy bills and neighbourhoods that are increasingly well-prepared for the future. Vesteda regards sustainability as an integral part of good landlord practices.
Vesteda CEO Astrid Schlüter: “This award confirms that ‘Housing as a Force for Good’ is an essential part of our day-to-day practice. We are now demonstrating at portfolio level what this means for 28,000 homes. Our investors are seeing this reflected in higher valuations, and our tenants are living more comfortably and with lower energy costs. Ultimately, that is what it’s all about.”
Stephan de Bie, Head of ESG at Vesteda: “Certifying an entire portfolio requires consistent data and a uniform approach across the whole organisation. That foundation is now in place. This award encourages us to continue to increase the sustainable impact of our portfolio.”
About BREEAM
BREEAM is an international method used to measure and certify the sustainability of buildings. The system uses specific questions and assessment criteria to drive operational improvements. This enables Vesteda to compare its results independently with those of other landlords, both at home and abroad.
